Thought-Provoking Questions for Self-Discovery

Ferris Bueller, in the famous movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, said: “Life moves by pretty fast, if you don’t stop to look around every once in a while, you might miss it.” #Accurate. We move so quickly from one thing to another, and we never stop to check in with ourselves to make sure all that movement has some sort of purpose behind it.

Below I have listed a few self-discovery questions and advice on what to do with the answers you get. Move to a quiet space and reserve the next ten minutes to think about these questions and the actions you are going to take throughout the rest of the day.

Question: What Matters To Me The Most?

Seems broad, but it isn’t. What in your life is most important to you? What gets you out of bed in the morning? That is what you are working towards every day.

Action: Place Reminders Around You

If your kids matter most to you, then place their pictures around your workspace. If financial freedom matters most, create a board of the life you want to achieve. Give yourself daily reminders that will help you push through the hard times.

Question: What Three Words Describe Me Best?

If someone who knew you well had to describe you in only three words, what would they use? This is an excellent way to identify positive traits such as funny, loyal, reliable, passionate, and hard-working.

Action: Write Them Down

Pull up a note pad on your phone and write these three words down. Then, any time you get down on yourself, review these three words. Sometimes, we just need a reminder of the good we possess and the value we bring to the world around us.

Question: What’s Keeping Me Awake At Night?

So many people lay awake at night, worrying about life’s problems. Then, they wake up exhausted the next morning and lack the energy to put their best foot forward. This practice is unhealthy and unproductive. The problem is, people rarely actually take steps to solve the problem.

Action: Make A Plan

I want you to list out everything you worry about at night. If you have too, put a pad next to your bed and write down things as they pop into your head. Then, write out what steps you are going to take to solve the problem. You may not solve it right away, but you will sleep better at night, knowing you are working towards a solution.

Let’s talk about transformation. Who is better at transforming better than anyone else? Transformers! Standing up after a harsh reality is not just about perseverance, but transformation. The old saying goes, “doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is the definition of insanity.” Transforming a behavior, a habit, a thought process, or a physical part of oneself is a necessary step for being resilient.

Look at the Transformers movies: the giant mechs literally transform themselves into different forms to best suit the situation at hand. You can do the same, sometimes physically, sometimes metaphorically. The next time life smacks you in the face, and you must persist, think of how you can better persist through to your goal. Doing something better does not have to be a monumental shift in what you do or who you are; it can (and often is) a small tweak to what you say or do. For example, if you’re having limited success selling your product, transform slightly and smile the next time you are selling, and see how this works, then adjust accordingly. Transform yourself into someone who will get the result you want.

Adaptogens – Are they all hype?

What Are Adaptogens?

Russian researchers coined the term ‘adaptogen’ in the 1940s to describe a class of botanicals that increase resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stresses. It’s said that adaptogens build up general vitality, including the physical and mental capacity for work. Adaptogens are also said to restore strength and vigor.

How are they supposed to work?

The effect of stress on the body is broken down into two phases:

  1. Adaptation: when the body copes with the stressor, this learning helps the body deal with that stressor and other harmful agents.
  2. Exhaustion: when the body is overwhelmed by the stressor, and the net effect of stressor becomes negative.

People believe adaptogens help the body in stressful situations by expanding the adaptation phase while delaying or preventing the exhaustion phase.

3 Major Groups of Adaptogens:

  1. Mushrooms: maitake, reishi, cordyceps
  2. Herbs: licorice root, Panax ginseng, Rhodiola, ashwagandha, etc.
  3. Foods: garlic, ginger, green tea

Each adaptogen is said to have its own unique identity. Herbalists choose among the adaptogens to select the one that best matches the individual.

What the research says:

There are 358 clinical trials related to the search terms’ adaptogen’ or ‘adaptogenic.’ Ashwagandha is the overall winner in terms of publications and has 976 publications and 20 clinical trials.

A 2012 study evaluated ashwagandha 300mg twice daily versus placebo for 60 days in 64 subjects with a history of chronic stress. There were a statistically significant decrease in all stress assessment scales and plasma cortisol levels in the treatment arm as compared to the placebo arm of the study. In a second study, ashwagandha reduced serum cortisol, body weight, and BMI.

Four Benefits of Being a Great Listener:

Empathetic: someone who actively listens to others can understand them on a deeper level and in a more meaningful way. Research shows that mirroring a conversation partner’s gestures, expressions, posture, vocal pitch, or tone makes people like and trust you more.

Confident: listening will give you the ability to respond accordingly and interact with ease, which makes you feel and appear more confident. When you’re in a conversation with someone, it’s easy to be in your head thinking of what you’re going to say. If you get out of your head and carefully listen, the talking points will become apparent.

Well-Spoken: The time you spend listening to someone’s story allows you to carefully gauge the situation, read their emotions, and respond in tune with the story.

Curious: You might be surprised by the ideas and stories people share with you and learn valuable information. Besides, a great way to engage is to be curious and ask questions. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it will make you an excellent conversationalist.
