SELF-DISCOVERY: Unleash the Achiever within

Willpower Tik Tok Challenge, But For Adults

DON’T EAT THE COOKIES you tell yourself every time you pass the breakroom table. You can smell them from your desk, and this diet is terrible, and you haven’t eaten in hours, and they look good, and one probably won’t hurt. But no, you struggle on through the day and eventually make it to closing time pleased you resisted the temptation to break your diet. You feel…worn out, unsatisfied…still hungry. You’ve been using your willpower throughout the day by expending energy and effort to fight against your urges. There must be a better way.

The Marshmallow Test is a famous test given to children to determine delayed gratification and future reward. Children of various ages were given a marshmallow and told that if they waited until the researcher came back (about 5 min.) that they would get two marshmallows (gee whiz!). Many failed by eating the marshmallow as soon as the researcher left the room, but many also were able to wait and were rewarded with double the loot. We can learn from how they accomplished this monumental exercise in willpower.

Willpower is finite, and using it does strengthen your mental fortitude, but it also exhausts you, so you’re mentally fatigued when you have to make another important decision. The kids that won 2x the marshmallow rewards did so by distracting themselves from the temptation by closing their eyes, turning away, singing a song, playing a game with themselves. They distracted themselves from having to exert willpower and, as Mary Poppins would say, “the job becomes a game.”

Improve your odds at winning the willpower game by putting the cookies in the fridge, so you don’t see them, locking the game controller away, so you aren’t tempted, or not keeping so much chocolate in the house. Give yourself a willpower powerup and avoid the temptation entirely, or at least begin by limiting your exposure.

Urgent v. Important: The Eisenhower (Decision) Matrix

The difference between urgent and important may seem intuitive after thinking about it, but how many times do we confuse them while in the moment? Important means something significant or of value, while urgent typically signifies something that requires immediate action or attention. An oil change in 1k miles is important, but not urgent. Answering the doorbell may be urgent, but not important. A task can be either or both, and often we may feel that something we must get done is urgent when it is important, and visa-versa.

The Eisenhower Matrix, named after the former president, is an effective decision-making tool to assist you in deciding what to accomplish and when.

HEALTH & WELLNESS: Stay healthy in the hustle

Health Benefits of Stretching

Benefits of Stretching for the Body:

Flexibility

The more you stretch, the more you move your muscles, and the more flexible you become. Over time, stretching will become easier for your body.

Posture

Poor posture can easily be reversed and healed with daily stretching. Because stretching strengthens your muscles and encourages proper alignment, your body posture will be less slouched and more vertical.

Injury Prevention

The more you prepare your muscles for any exercising movement, the more your likelihood of injury decreases. When your muscles are warm and stretched, movement becomes easier and more fluid-like, which helps with injury prevention.

Increased Nutrients and Reduced Soreness

Most people know that stretching increases blood supply, but they do not realize that it also increases nutrient supply to muscles. Because stretching allows blood to flow through your body, the nutrients in the blood are being carried and spread out throughout your body as well. Increased blood and nutrient supply also help reduce soreness.

Benefits of Stretching for the Mind

Calmed Mind

Stretching provides your mind with a mental break. It allows you to recharge and refresh the blood flow throughout your body, resulting in a calmer and more peaceful mindset.

Release Tension

Many individuals carry stress in their muscles. When feeling overwhelmed, muscles tighten in defense. The more you stretch, the less tense muscles will be. Stretching is a beneficial form of stress management.

Increase Energy

Increased blood and nutrient flow also increase your energy levels resulting in an improved sense of invigoration.

Keep In Mind

Stretching is not a warm-up activity

Stretching with cold muscles (before a workout) may result in injury. Stretching is most effective when muscles are warm. It is best to stretch after a small bout of physical activity, perhaps after a 5-minute walk at the beginning of your workout and after you’re all done.

LEADERS & INFLUENCERS: Learn from the best

Personality Types & Leadership Styles

Leadership style naturally grows out of personality type. Here are four personality groups and the leadership styles of each.

The Analyst Leader

The logical Analyst leader will create and adopt systems with an improved organization in mind. Rationality guides their matter-of-fact approach. They have little patience for anything not rooted in logic. They appreciate inventiveness.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is a prime example of an Analyst leader because he created programs such as Social Security and the Works Progress Administration to help alleviate the Great Depression.

The Diplomat Leader

The visionary Diplomat involves themselves with ideas linked to higher causes and values. They inspire and incite a sense of purpose and vision. They are future-focused.

Walt Disney was a Diplomat leader who dreamed big and didn’t let anyone stop him. His motto was “Dream, Believe, Dare, Do.”

The Sentinel Leader

The responsible Sentinel leader will take care of business with an administrator’s eye, is detail-oriented and meticulous. These personality types work from a sense of responsibility to the greater good. They protect and preserve society.

Popes like Pope Francis are an excellent example of Sentinel leaders. They take care of their followers with a duty to the Church and its principles.

The Explorer Leader

The agile Explorer leader is quick to find solutions and takes the organization in a new and exciting direction. They don’t mind taking risks when there are high rewards. They are about action, not planning and analyzing.

Richard Branson is an Explorer leader. His creation of Virgin Record Megastores paved the way for the more than 400 companies under the Virgin banner. His obsession with innovation and the future explains why his company is entering the spaceflight industry.

Although one leadership style might come more naturally to you, you can always develop the skill sets of other leadership styles.

FUN STUFF – ALL ABOUT FIREWORKS

A firework requires three key components: an oxidizer, a fuel, and a chemical mixture to produce the color.

Different metal elements comprise firework color concoctions. When an element burns, its electrons get excited, and it releases energy in the form of light. Different chemicals burn at different wavelengths of light, creating various colors.
